Dickinson Co. Supervisors, P & Z Commission Get Into Flap

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– What started out as an informal work session between the Dickinson county board of supervisors and the Planning and Zoning Commission Monday afternoon evolved into commission members expressing frustration over the supervisors recent vote to override the P & Z’s recommendation to approve a subdivision Rick DeMuth was proposing southwest of Milford.

P & Z member Bill Eich said he’s been a member of the commission since about 1992. He says he felt insulted by the supervisors five-to-nothing vote turning down the commission’s recommendation.

But supervisor Mardi Allen says she felt there were too many issues about the proposed subdivision that weren’t answered, such as septic tanks. Eich and other P & Z members differed with that, and the meeting turned argumentative. David Kolhaase, the county’s Planning and Zoning Administrator, attempted to act as mediator, saying both sides need to work together more closely.

The Planning and Zoning Commission again Monday called on the supervisors to adopt urban design standards for streets in subdivisions, which would be taken over by the county once they’ve been constructed to the requirements. The supervisors agreed to take up the issue again at their meeting April 22nd.
