(Spirit Lake)– With the exception for the Democratic race for fifth district congress, Tuesday’s primary election in Dickinson county was very mundane. In fact, there was a record low turnout.
Dickinson County Auditor Nancy Reiman says only 410 of the county’s nearly three thousand eligible voters turned out.
That translated into a long, boring day for precinct workers. For example, only two people voted in the Excelsior Township precinct; four people showed up at the polling site in Westport Township and five people cast ballots in the Spirit Lake East Precinct. Turnout was even low in some of the heavier populated precincts. In Center Grove One, which includes the city of Okoboji, only 38 people cast ballots.
As was the case district-wide, Joyce Schulte was the winner of the Democratic Primary who will run against Republican Incumbent Steve King for the Fifth District Congressional seat in November. Schulte received 52 percent of the vote in Dickinson county while Gene Blanshan had 38 percent and Sal Mohamed had 11 percent.
