Delays Over Repair Of Rail Crossing Frustrate Spirit Lake Officials

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The city of Spirit Lake is getting inpatient with a railroad over delays in fixing a crossing.

City officials say they were told by the Iowa Northwestern Railroad the crossing on Peoria Avenue would be re-opened late Wednesday. That didn’t happen though…and the street is still closed this (Thursday) morning.

John Larkin of the Iowa Northwestern Railroad blames the ongoing delays on several factors. For one thing, he says the railroad was working from incorrect specifications and had ordered the wrong materials. They had to reorder the correct ones…which have since been delivered. In addition to that, Larkin says the contractor had to take some time off for a family emergency. Larkin says he’s trying to find a new contractor and hopes to have one here Friday. He’s still not sure though when the crossing will be finished and the street re-opened.
