D-N-R Head Responds To Criticism Over Land Acquisitions

November 23, 2014

(Wahpeton)– Those criticizing the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for land acquisitions need to think twice. That’s the opinion of the agency’s director, Jeff Vonk.

The D-N-R has come under fire from those who say the state should not be acquiring any more land because it doesn’t have money to take care of what it already has. Vonk, who was in the Iowa Great Lakes earlier this week for the D-N-R commissioners meeting, told KUOO news he agrees with that to a certain extent. But Vonk says the agency’s hands are tied because a lot of outside money it receives can only be used for land acquisition. Vonk says most of it comes from agencies and organizations like the U-S Fish and Wildlife Service, Pheasants Forever and Ducks Unlimited.
