County Protects Itself From Computer Viruses

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The recent bombardment of computer viruses has Dickinson county going on the defensive.

County Auditor Nancy Reiman told the Board of Supervisors Tuesday the recent proliferation of viruses has resulted in the county blocking some files from its computer system.

Reiman says some special software has been installed on the county’s computer server that allows it to filter incoming e-mail. Anything with strange-looking attachments…such as files ending in dot exe, are automatically purged out of the system.

Viruses are commonly transmitted with such file extensions. They are activated when someone opens such a file.
