Corn, Soybean Planting Making Excellent Progress

April 22, 2026

(Lakefield, Mn.)– For the most part, some excellent progress is being made with corn and soybean planting so far this spring. In fact, Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield says some producers have completed soybean planting and are moving to corn…

“We’ve got a lot of soybeans that have been planted, that trend seems to continue and for good reason. We’ve had just good data and good results with the higher yields in these early plantings. The trade-off there is sometimes the herbicide wears out a little bit quicker than you’d like so we might have to do an extra post emergent spraying, but other than that, that’s been good and everybody seems to be going on corn now, big time this week. When you have these great soil conditions like we’ve got, I think they might be the best ever, and when you can plant from fence row to fence row without having to stop and turn around for a wet spot, you’re planting efficiency is really good. So tremendous progress on a daily basis.”

Nesseth says the pace is a bit ahead of the long term average…

“I’d say it’s kind of prime planting days for corn, for sure, the third, fourth week of April, and soybeans are just incredible. That’s kind of the big change that’s happened in production ag here in corn and soybeans is that soybeans getting planted earlier than they have traditionally in the past. So yeah, when we look at planting progress on an annual basis we’re way ahead of schedule.”

Nesseth says most of the small grain crops such as oats and wheat have been planted.
