(Cedar Rapids)– Consumer advocate groups are asking the Iowa Utilities Board to reconsider its decision to allow the state’s only nuclear plant to be sold to a Florida company.
The board voted last month in favor of Alliant Energy’s sale of the Duane Arnold Energy Center near Palo to F-P-L Energy.
However, consumer advocate groups filed motions this month requesting a rehearing of the decision, claiming the sale would cost ratepayers up to 700 million dollars extra because F-P-L would be free to raise prices.
Alliant had decided not to renew the power plant’s license after it expires in 2014 and says it would close the plant if the sale had not been approved.
The State Office of the Consumer Advocate claim the board could have considered alternaties to selling the plant.
Alliant has until next week to fle a response to the appeal. The board has until next month to grant or deny the rehearing request.
