(Undated)– The unseasonably cold weather is causing concern with crops.
Paul Kassel, a Crops Specialist with the Iowa State University Extension Service, says the corn that has been planted is just sitting in the cold, moist ground and won’t germinate until it warms up. He says growing degree days don’t start accumulating until the temperature hits atleast 50 degrees. Temperatures the last several days have failed to get out of the 40’s. Snow even fell over the weekend…but didn’t accumulate.
After another hard freeze this (Tues.) morning, the National Weather Service says temperatures should finally start to moderate today, temperatures getting into the 50’s. Readings in the 60’s are expected Wednesday, with 70’s possible the latter part of the week. Along with the warmer temperatures though will come an increased chance for showers and thunderstorms.
