(Spirit Lake)– One of the worse in recent years. That’s how some area school superintendents describe the cold and flu outbreak.
Spirit Lake Superintendent Dr. Tim Grieves says absentee rates are soaring. As of this (Wed.) morning, Grieves says 46 students in the elementary were absent; 88 in the middle school were out; and 34 high school students were gone.
Grieves says custodians are disinfecting door knobs, faucet handles, railings and other areas. As of right now atleast, Grieves says he isn’t considering calling off classes.
In the Okoboji School District, Superintendent Quentin Reifenrath says absentee rates spiked last week and have been declining since. He’s hopeful the worse is already over there. Like Spirit Lake, Reifenrath says middle school students were hit especially hard.
Graettinger schools dismissed at 10:00 this morning because of extremely high numbers of students who were ill.
Grieves says Spirit Lake has been fortunate so far in that teachers for the most part have managed to stay healthy.
