(Spirit Lake)– A close call Saturday on Big Spirit Lake.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says two men were ice fishing between Harlan’s Beach and Sandbar Beach on the northeast side of the lake when a chunk of ice they were standing on broke off from a larger sheet and started to drift to the northeast.
Concerned for the men’s safety, several people who saw them called authorities. The Spirit Lake Fire Department’s Water Rescue Unit, Okoboji-Arnolds Park Underwater Search And Rescue Unit and it’s air boat were called to the scene. But before rescuers got there, the ice chunk floated to another sheet of ice near Angler’s Bay and the two men walked off the lake safely.
No injuries were reported.
The incident took place around 9:45 a.m. Saturday.
