Clay County Collision Claims Life

November 22, 2014

(Dickens)– A two-vehicle collision Wednesday in Clay county has claimed a life.

The Sheriff’s Office says vehicles driven by 37-year-old Miriam Vazquez-Gonzalez of Dickens and 31-year-old Benjamin Vanberkum of Amarillo, Texas collided at the intersection of two county roads near Dickens.

Deputies say Vazquez-Gonzalez was driving a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire southbound and Vanberkum was driving a 2009 Dodge truck eastbound when the two collided. Authorities say the impact of the crash caused the vehicle driven by Vazquez-Gonzalez to spin around about 180 degrees. It then rolled onto its top, landing in the south ditch facing north. The truck Vanberkum was driving spun about 90 degrees, coming to rest facing south on the roadway.

Vazquez-Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene; no injuries were reported to Vanberkum.

The car driven by Vazquez-Gonzalez was totaled; the truck Vanberkum was driving sustained an estimated $10,000 in damage.

The collision took place shortly after 3:30 p.m.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Dickens Fire and Rescue, the Clay County Medical Examiner’s Office and Spencer Hospital ambulance and paramedics.

Authorities say the crash remains under investigation.
