Chain Reaction Crash Sends Two To LRH

November 22, 2014

(Okoboji)– A five-vehicle chain reaction crash Saturday on Highway 71 in Okoboji sent two people to the hospital with possible injuries.

Okoboji police say it involved vehicles driven by 20-year-old Michael Abel of Ireton; 19-year-old Kelsey Winterfeld of Sioux Center; 22-year-old Casey Burnell of Spencer; 24-year-old Brady Eekhoff of Ames and 18-year-old Rochelle Feldkamp of Sibley.

Police say Abel, Winterfeld, Burnell and Feldkamp were southbound on Highway 71 in the inside lane and Eekhoff was also southbound in the outside lane adjacent to the vehicles driven by Winterfeld and Burnell. Officers say Feldkamp stopped abruptly for traffic in front of her. Winterfeld and Burnell also abruptly stopped, but Abel continued on, colliding with the rear of the vehicle driven by Winterfeld, which in turn collided with the rear of the vehicle driven by Burnell, causing Winterfeld’s vehicle to swerve into the other lane where it collided with the vehicle driven by Eekhoff.
Winterfeld’s vehicle then left the road and went into the ditch. As it was doing so, it collided with the left side of the vehicle driven by Burnell, which then collided with the vehicle driven by Feldkamp.

Winterfeld and Burnell were both taken by ambulance to Lakes Regional Healthcare with possible injuries. Possible injuries were also reported to Abel, but he was not transported. No injuries were reported to Eekhoff or Feldkamp.

The crash took place shortly after 10:30 a.m. Saturday near the AmericInn in Okoboji.
