Broken Hose Sited As Cause Of Sibley Fertilizer Spill

November 22, 2014

(Sibley)– Officials say about 400 gallons of liquid nitrogen fertilizer was spilled earlier this week at a Sibley elevator.

Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources say the spill was caused by a broken transfer hose.

The D-N-R says most of the nitrogen was contained in a pit, but some of it crossed a parking lot and went into a creek.

Officials don’t think there will be a significant impact on the creek. They say high water and recent rain should dilute any fertilizer that did make its way into the creek.

The spill took place on Monday.
