(Spirit Lake)– A Clive, Iowa woman escaped injury in a boat fire this (Tues.) afternoon on West Lake Okoboji.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says Teresa Cernic was the loan occupant in the boat which caught fire between the harbor and Pike’s Point State Park.
Cernic was picked up by a passing boater and brought to safety.
The official cause of the blaze isn’t known, but D-N-R officer Jeff Morrison says it’s believed to have been electrical in nature.
The boat was completely engulfed when firefighters and officials arrived at the scene. D-N-R officers managed to tow it near shore where the Spirit Lake Fire Department could spray water and foam on it.
The make and model of the boat, which was completely destroyed, wasn’t known.
Authorities were called to the scene around 3:30 p.m.
A plume of black smoke from the blaze could be seen from as far away as Spirit Lake.
