(West Okoboji)– Authorities say a plugged sewer main is to blame for an incident earlier this week in which some wastewater entered West Lake Okoboji.
An estimated 500 gallons of wastewater backed up through a storm drain and went into the lake. Some of the sewage also seeped into the nearby ground. It was soaked up by crews with the Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District using lime and disinfecting agents.
Water samples from the lake are being monitored, but D-N-R environmental officials believe the spill won’t cause any significant problems.
Downstream water suppliers in Wahpeton and Milford were notified of the situation as a precaution.
The incident took place on Tuesday.
