(Milford)– A bird’s nest is being blamed for a fire at a Milford residence that officials say could have been much worse if it hadn’t been discovered when it was.
Milford Fire Chief Jim Carpenter says firefighters were called to 1605 16th Street in Milford around 9:30 this (Fri.) morning after getting a report of a bird’s nest on fire in a light fixture on the front of the house.
Carpenter says two children who were home from school sick discovered the fire when they went outside to see why the dog was barking. They called 911 and left the house and waited at the end of the driveway.
Milford Police Chief Vernon Flack arrived on the scene and put out the fire with a handheld fire extinguisher.
Upon arriving firefighters checked the surrounding area and wet down some debris between the steps and the home. Firefighters were on the scene less than a half-hour.
Carpenter praised the kids for calling 911 and getting out of the house.
Carpenter reminds everyone to make sure debris such as nests and leaves are not trapped around light fixtures of other equipment that generate heat.
It’s also important to make sure all vents are clear on your home, including drier and furnace exhausts.
