(Spirit Lake)– Authorities say a fax some lakes area businesses received over the past several days appears to be a scam.
The letter is similar to previous scams that have originated from Nigeria. It asks for anyone with a U-S bank account into which money from an unclaimed inheritance fund would be transferred.
The letter goes on to state that those who agree to make their account available will be compensated from the total amount that’s transferred.
Authorities say it appears the letter’s goal is to obtain bank account numbers and other personal information. As a result, they say you should think twice before responding.
The letter stops short of asking for your account number. It asks for a response through an e-mail address that’s listed and even a telephone number that appears on the fax.
If you do decide to respond, authorities say you should ask a lot of tough questions before divulging any personal information…including any bank account numbers.
