Authorities Cracking Down On Noisy Boats

November 23, 2014

(Arnolds Park)– Representatives of a newly formed organization feel they’re making progress in quieting down noisy boats on the Iowa Great Lakes.

Phil Petersen of the Iowa Great Lakes Water Safety Council told the Cleanwater Alliance Wednesday they’ve purchased a decibel meter Lakes Patrol officers have been using to enforce a noise law. Under Iowa code, a boat motor can be no louder than 86 decibels at 50 feet away from the craft.

Petersen says about 20 warnings have been issued so far this summer to violators.
