Area K-Mart’s future uncertain

The K-Mart in Spencer is slated to close according to a list making the rounds, but corporate officails say they don’t know where the list came from. The retail giant filed for chapter 11 bankrupcy January 23rd, but says it will attempt to keep all 2,114 stores open. The list, released to the news media, says the Spencer store as well as ones in Webster City, Fort Dodge, and Des Moines are all slated to close. Retail analysts say several hundred K-Marts would have to close for the firm to become profitable again.
