AP Council Opts Not To Pursue Municipal Utility For Now; Changes Road Name

November 22, 2014

(Arnolds Park)– The Arnolds Park city council Wednesday heard more concern over the Bridge’s Bay project going on just southeast of the city. Phil Petersen requested the city of Arnolds Park define low impact development and to make sure it’s enforced should that area be annexed into the city.

In other business, the council accepted a recommendation not to proceed to the next step into the possibility of establishing a municipal telecommunications utility, atleast for now. They took the action based on a recommendation from the city’s representative on the committee. City Administrator Ron Walker told the council the findings of the initial study were very disappointing in that far fewer people than expected would be willing to sign up for the services.

In other business, the council took no action on a request from Jon Rute to trade property in the area of Pillsbury Point to square up a property line. Councilman Jim Jensen said he’s concerned the city could be setting a precedence if it went along with the request, saying there are literally hundreds of similar instances in Arnolds Park.

The council set December 14th as the date for public hearings and bid lettings on improvements to Dam Road and 202nd Street; approved a new street light for the corner of Rohr Street and 240th Avenue in the Pelican Ridge area; and they adopted an ordinance changing the name of that part of Okoboji Grove Road that follows Highway 71 through town. Prior to the Highway being re-built, Okoboji Grove Road was aligned with Highway 71. The project resulted in the construction of a cul-de-sac which now physically separates Okoboji Grove Road from the Highway, resulting in two separate stretches of Okoboji Grove Road. City Administrator Ron Walker says it was causing confusion for those unfamiliar with the town looking for specific addresses on Okoboji Grove Road. As a result, Highway 71 through Arnolds Park will now be named just that, Highway 71.

The council also approved the appointment of Julie Fillenwarth as the city’s representative on the Iowa Great Lakes Maritime Museum Board. Fillenwarth succeeds Garnette Anderson who is stepping down as the city’s representative.
