(Cedar Rapids)– Alliant Energy says it’s going to build some new power plants in Iowa.
Company spokesman John Ruff tells KUOO news it’s “Power Iowa” initiative will result in the construction of a 500 megawatt gas fueled generating station to be on-line by the summer of 2004; and a 400-500 megawatt coal-fired plant to be on-line by 2007.
Ruff says Alliant will also add between 50 and 100 megawatts from renewable sources between 2002 and 2005.
Another component, according to Ruff, will have the company working with its customers to increase energy efficiency and conservation.
In addition to providing more power, Ruff says the “Power Iowa” program will also serve as a jump-start for Iowa’s stalled economy. When it’s all said and done, Ruff says Alliant will have invested more than a billion dollars as a result of the venture. He says it will also result in hundreds of construction jobs; and depending on the size of the plants, anywhere from 25 to 100 permanent jobs would be created at the new plants.
