Alliant Energy Denies Request From Governor Not To Raise Rates

November 23, 2014

(Des Moines)– Alliant Energy has denied a request from Governor Chet Culver not to raise rates by 10 percent on electric customers in the state.

Instead, Alliant Energy has asked the Governor to help gain approval from the Iowa Utilities Board for a company proposal that would cut the permanent increase from 14 percent to six percent for the first three years after approval. Alliant has 525,000 Iowa customers and the 10 percent rate hike is to begin Saturday.

Culver said in a letter to Interstate Power and Light Co. President Tom Aller that the increase comes at a time when many of its customers are struggling financially. Alliant Energy is IPL’s parent company.

The state Utility Board isn’t expected to make a decision on the 14 percent increase until early next year.

The IUB will hold a public hearing on the proposed increase at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 14th in the Community Room at the Dickinson County Courthouse in Spirit Lake.
