Accident Near Lake Park Results In Minor Injuries

November 23, 2014

(Lake Park)– Minor injuries were reported in a two-vehicle accident Thursday on Highway Nine a mile west of Lake Park.

The Iowa State Patrol says 17-year-old Maggie Ackerman of Sibley was eastbound when she apparently fell asleep and drifted into the westbound lane in front of a vehicle driven by 49-year-old Lawrence Loughran of Blue Springs, Missouri…who had pulled onto the eastbound lane to avoid a collision. Authorities say Ackerman then traveled back into the eastbound lane…striking the vehicle driven by Loughran.

Ackerman was taken by ambulance to Dickinson County Memorial Hospital with some aches and pains. She was treated and released. Loughran sustained a minor scrape on an arm. He refused treatment.

A 1991 Ford Escort driven by Ackerman was described as a total loss. Moderate damage was reported to a 2000 Ford pickup driven by Loughran.

The mishap took place around 1:30 p.m. It was investigated by the Iowa State Patrol with assistance from the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, Lake Park Police Department, Lake Park Fire and Rescue and the Lake Park ambulance.

Authorities say charges are pending against Ackerman.

The mishap remains under investigation.
