300-400 Yards Of Grass, Trees Damaged By Fire

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A grass fire late Monday afternoon southeast of Spirit Lake burned an estimated 300 to 400 yards of grass and damaged an estimated 30 pine trees.

Spirit Lake Fire Chief Wally Jorgenson says firefighters were called to an area south of 165th Street near 255th Avenue near Francis Sites around 4:45 p.m.

Upon arriving Jorgenson says firefighters found a large grassy area on fire, along with a number of trees. He says the blaze was very difficult to get at-firefighters had to use an all-terrain-vehicle and back pack equipment to put it out. Jorgenson says a strong south wind complicated efforts.

After more than an hour of battling the blaze, firefighters were finally able to get an upper hand and extinguish it. No injuries were reported.

Jorgenson says the potential for grass fires is very high right now. He’s hopeful predictions for showers and thunderstorms come true.
