Recent Snow, Cold Puts Harvest On Hold For A Bit

October 28, 2020

(Lakefield, Mn.)– This past Sunday’s snowfall and the recent cold weather have put what’s left of the corn harvest on hold. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield says producers should be able to resume the harvest in another couple of days, if not even sooner…Harvest On Hold01

“The corn that’s left that I’ve seen and observed looks like it’s standing really well and ear retentions are good, so I don’t think it’s going to be much of an issue. We’re probably, I mean, Steve, there’s probably only five to 10 percent of the corn left. A lot of the producers have, you know, finished and completed harvest and are just waiting to do some tillage and, you know, some of that even has been kind of ongoing through this.”

Nesseth expects most of the fall field work will be wrapping up in the next couple of weeks…Harvest On Hold02

“I really think, Steve, once we get through everything here, you know, if we get a couple, three weeks of good weather we’re probably going to have most of the tasks everybody probably has on their check list will probably be completed and, you know, guys will be putting away their machinery and I think they’ll just look back at this year as a great fall harvest.”

Nesseth says the colder soil temperatures are especially beneficial for producers applying nitrogen right now.
