2005 Opens With Ice Storm

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– 2005 in northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota opened Saturday with an ice storm.

Periods of freezing rain and drizzle hampered the region all day, and wasn’t expected to taper off until Saturday evening.

Roads are up to 100 percent ice-covered throughout the region, and motorists are advised to allow for plenty of extra time to reach their destination. You should also make sure there’s plenty of room between you and the vehicle ahead of you.

Most of the freezing rain has ended, but freezing drizzle was expected to continue until late in the evening.

Lakes Area law enforcement agencies report no serious accidents as of Saturday evening as the result of the icy conditions. And local electric utilities say they’ve had no major power outages so far as a result of the ice. They credit a lack of wind for that.

The National Weather Service says things should dry out Sunday, with a chance of snow on Monday. They add the potential exists for the first significant snow storm of the season Tuesday and Wednesday.
