(Spirit Lake)– The old jury duty delinquency scam is back once again.
The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office reports getting calls from residents stating that they’ve been contacted by someone falsely claiming to be a deputy. The recipient of the call is told they failed to show up for jury duty and that they can avoid being arrested by making a payment.
The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office says they do NOT take bond money over the phone.
Authorities add it’s a reminder to never provide money, gift cards, financial information or any personal information to someone claiming to be in law enforcement or some other type of official. They say if you have questions, you should contact the Dickinson County Communications Center at 336-2525, or your local law enforcement agency.
They add that scammers can also make it look like the call is legitimate by displaying an official number on caller I.D. Authorities say you should not assume a call is legitimate just because the number may be familiar.
