Many Food Pantries Continue To See Increase In Demand

October 27, 2026

(Undated)– Soaring food and gas prices are forcing more people to turn to food banks for assistance.

Annette Hacker of Food Bank of Iowa says pantries in 55 counties, including some in our area, continue to see an increase in demand…

“We continue to see more people visiting a pantry for the very first time. They just can’t make ends meet.”

Hacker says the increased cost of fuel is complicating matters as it’s cut into the Food Bank of Iowa’s budget…

“When you’re spending $7,000 a month more every month on diesel fuel, that’s money that we could be, and wishing we were using, for food.”

She adds the demand is likely to continue to go up even more into the foreseeable future.
