(Spencer)– Those attending this year’s Clay County Fair will notice a considerable reduction in shade. Fair Manager and CEO Jason Brockshus says emerald ash borer was hard on them this year…
“147 trees, I believe, are no longer with us. We have some very disgruntled squirrels. Hopefully fair goers find the ones we have looking great. We have replaced about 20 trees, but you know, the best time to plant a tree is 10 years ago, but we’re planting them as fast as we can. We’re not going to plant any more right before fair now, but as soon as fair is done we do have a plan to get some more in the ground this fall.”
He says the dead and dying trees posed a potential liability issue should a tree or branch come down on a building or worse yet, a fair goer.
Brockshus says the Clay County Fair’s charitable trust is establishing the “plant the future” campaign to raise funds to plant new trees on the grounds.
