(Spirit Lake)– The Iowa Court of Appeals will hold oral arguments in September in the Iowa Great Lakes in a case with ties to northwest Iowa. The proceedings will take place Tuesday, September 15th at the Sami Bedell Center for the Performing Arts at Spirit Lake High School. The oral arguments are open to the public and will begin at 7:00 pm that evening.
The case dates back to the pandemic. Andrew Perry, a nursing student at Dordt University at the time, applied for an exemption from getting a covid-19 vaccination as part of the university’s requirements, siting an exemption, which the college denied. Perry sued Dordt in 2022 for discrimination based on religion under the Iowa Civil Rights Act. The district court found Perry did not have a sincere religious belief opposing the vaccine and dismissed the suit.
