(Sibley)– A St. Cloud, Minnesota man faces multiple charges for allegedly operating a riding lawn mower while intoxicated Saturday near Sibley. 30-year-old Zachary Garvick was charged with operating while intoxicated, assaulting an officer, open container and 5th degree criminal mischief.
A criminal complaint alleges Garvick had been operating the mower on private property without permission, allegedly damaging property in the process. Garvick allegedly refused to identify himself to the property owner and left the area on the mower. The complainant spotted Garvick at a liquor store in Sibley a short time later and contacted the Sheriff’s Office. A deputy found Garvick operating the mower westbound on a county road, swerving into the opposite lane. The deputy initiated a traffic stop and Garvick pulled over, but he then allegedly put the mower in reverse, heading toward the patrol vehicle. The deputy was able to avoid a collision. He eventually made contact with Garvick and reported smelling alcohol. Field tests indicated his blood-alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit.
Garvick was taken into custody and transported to the Osceola County Jail. The complaint states Garvick became belligerent and exhibited aggressive behavior toward jail staff. He was then tased and was secured without further incident.
He faces a preliminary hearing August 12th.
