(Terril)– The former Mayor of Terril is speaking out on her decision to resign as the city’s leader. As we reported previously, Julie Thiesen announced late last week she was stepping down effective Thursday, July 30th. Thiesen served 12 years on the Terril City Council and was Mayor a little more than five years.
In an interview this (Mon.) morning, Thiesen told KUOO news she’s proud of what was accomplished during her tenure…
“We did purchase a Blue Star Memorial sign in honor of our veterans; the telephone office was remodeled to create a City Clerk’s Office, a sexton office and a Fire Chief Office. Then we sold our garbage truck to Harris Sanitation and they’re doing our garbage service for us now. And with the community’s help and everybody, not just the council and me, we created a new entrance to the Terril Elementary School and also a playground was established. We were able to build a pergola and do landscaping at the library and we also dedicated two benches this summer and we were happy that Pro Coop got a gastrol and built a huge addition to their facility which really helped our town. A new maintenance shed was built and modernized. We bought a new city pickup, a payloader and also we got the water plant built.”
And even though she’s proud of those accomplishments, Thiesen says there was one reason in particular that led to her decision to step down…
“I feel grateful that I’ve been a part of all these wonderful opportunities to do these things but I feel that when you’re working in a town you need to run as a team and all work together as a team, but I feel at this time this is not happening and it’s time for me to step down.”
The Terril City Council will decide on whether to fill the vacancy by appointment or a special election. The council will discuss that, along with how to fill a vacancy that has also occurred now on the city council, at a special meeting set for 6:00 pm Tuesday (Aug. 4th) at the Terril City Hall.
