High Wind Friday Afternoon Flips Boats Out Of Slips; Damages Hoists

August 01, 2026

(West Okoboji)– Some boat owners on the Iowa Great Lakes are out looking for their watercraft.

Wind gusting to nearly 50 mph Friday (7/31) caused some boats to become unmoored and even knocked some out of slips on boat hoists, sending them to the opposite side of the lake where they washed up on shore. Some were damaged in the process.

Several boats, including a pontoon and a jet ski, could be seen washed up on the shoreline late Friday (7/31) afternoon in the area of Terrace Park Beach on the southwest side of West Lake Okoboji.

Damage was also reported to some boat hoists, with some having covers torn off.

Officials have been attempting to notify owners of the boats that were found washed up on shorelines.
