Local Economic Development Officials Exploring Pros & Cons Of AI

July 30, 2026

(Spirit Lake)– Economic development professionals in the region say they’re keeping close tabs on the development of AI and the pros and cons the technology presents. Curt Strouth, President and CEO of the Iowa Lakes Corridor Development Corporation says at the moment it’s a bit of a moving target…

“If a business has not looked into AI at this point, they’re probably going to be behind, because it’s going to impact everybody in some way. It’s going to impact everybody at a different level. I mean when you’re talking economic development, how does it affect us. It changes the way we do things but I think it’s a tool that we can use now to look at, be able to research properties quicker from what’s a utility load here, or what’s the acre price here. We can kind of execute some of that high level information relatively quickly.”

Strouth says the growth of AI is hinging largely on one factor in particular…

“You know, and data centers continue to be a big conversation in that as far as a capacity of supporting AI and data center conversations as we all know is a conversation that’s rapidly evolving and we have to keep our eyes on.”

Strouth made the comments at Tuesday’s Dickinson County Board of Supervisors meeting.
