(Des Moines)– Several schools in the area have been awarded competitive grants to establish therapeutic classrooms for students with emotional or behavioral needs.
Local districts receiving the funds include George-Little Rock, Spirit Lake and Storm Lake.
The Iowa Department of Education awarded a little more than $2.35 million in competitive grants to 10 school districts.
The Therapeutic Classroom Incentive Grant was established through state legislation signed into law in 2020. The program supports skill building, support to cope with stress and trauma, mental health treatment and crisis intervention and follow-up.
The awards for the 2026-’27 school year represent the sixth year of grant funding.
