Spencer, Clay County Could Have Renewed Discussion On Joint Public Works Facility

July 08, 2026

(Spencer)– There could be some renewed discussion on a possible joint public works facility between Clay county and the city of Spencer.

Spencer City Manager Kevin Robinson told the city council the initial talks got underway some time ago but stalled…

“Our Public Works Department, Mark, has led a conversation to establish five to seven key priorities that we want to see in a facility which is in line with ISG’s study from 2022. So I think we’ll be ready within the next three to to four weeks to have both elected bodies get back together and have a second conversation. We’re waiting for the county to get back to us on that.”

Robinson says city officials have toured similar joint facilities in Jackson, Minnesota and Sibley.

He made the comments while updating the Spencer City Council on some long term strategic planning during their meeting Monday evening.

He says a joint city-county facility would also be in line with an initiative by Governor Kim Reynolds for efficiencies and cooperation among local governmental entities.
