Ag Expert: It Will Take Some Time To Assess Any Impacts On Crops From Frost & Recent Hail Events

May 20, 2026

(Lakefield, Mn.)– It was a frosty start to the day today (Wed.) across the region. In many cases, roofs were white with frost, and in some cases, the ground was even covered. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield says time will tell what impact, if any, that will have on crops. He says the main concern is with soybeans, as the growing point for corn is still in the ground…

“A lot of those beans are emerged now and it’s a matter, it’s a wait and see thing that you’ve got to do, Steve. You just have to see if that growing point’s got damage, if there’s some new growth going and occurring, but that just takes some time. We’re just going to need to evaluate a lot of those stands later on. You know, we had some hail damage earlier in the week. We had some areas, in our trade area, particularly over in the Rushmore-Adrian area. But again, you just kind of have to wait and evaluate those plants and see if there’s some new growth coming and occurring, take some stand counts, and maybe there will be some areas we’ll have to do some re-planting in. Corn should be fine, the growing point is below the ground. So we just need some warmer temperatures. But I think overall that rain that we got earlier in the week, I think that was really a big plus for everything and so far I think as a whole, stand emergence looks really good.”

Nesseth says the first cutting of alfalfa for the season will likely get underway in the coming days, provided the weather allows.
