Local Authorities Warn Of New Scam

April 20, 2026

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public to yet another scam.

This one involves receiving a notification that a family member or friend is in custody and needs immediate payment for bond. The caller claims to be a bondsman or sergeant and requests the money be sent electronically in the form of PayPal, Venmo, CashApp, Apple Cash, and so on.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office says it does NOT collect bond money electronically, adding authorities will never call on the phone to request bond money or ask for personal or financial information in such a manner. They add that legitimate bonding processes do NOT happen through unsolicited phone calls, saying that if you DO get such a call, you should not give out any information or payment. Instead they say you should immediately hang up and contact local law enforcement directly using a trusted number.
