Estherville Lands DNR Urban Forestry Grant

April 08, 2026

(Estherville)– The city of Estherville has been awarded a $25,000 Urban Forestry Development Grant through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ Forestry Section. City Administrator Penny Clayton says it will allow the city to do several things…

“The emerald ash borer is going to do significant damage in our area, it already has started to do some significant damage, and I think that having both A, an inventory so we know exactly what we’re dealing with, and a tree management plan and how we’re going to replace these going forward so we don’t end up in the same situation again are going to be central to our decision making process. We need to use data-driven decision making in determining how to proceed with these things.”

Clayton says no local matching funds are required. She adds the city will seek proposals from consultants to fulfill the grant requirements.

She says they have until 2028 to complete the work, but they hope to have it done much sooner than that.

Clayton updated the city council on the grant award at their meeting Monday evening.
