Spencer Awarded Water Trails Grant

April 07, 2026

(Spencer)– The city of Spencer has been awarded a grant through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and its state water trails program. Bob Fullhart is the head of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department…

“This will improve our accesses out at Stolley’s and then also what we call the lookout area which is right by Gary’s on the River, so basically across from the boat ramp that we have down at West Leech Park. These will be carry down accesses, so they’re specifically meant for kayaks, canoes, but it will be a much needed improvement, especially out at Stolley’s where it’s a heavily used spot but it’s very difficult to get into the water. This group, the Iowa DNR, did do a water trail assessment or a water use assessment here in Spencer. We’re the number one used area from basically Dickinson county all the way down to where the Little Sioux goes into the Missouri River.”

Fullhart informed the city council of the grant award at their meeting Monday evening.
