A Second Special Election Will Be Held To Fill Another Vacancy On The Spencer City Council

March 24, 2026

(Spencer)– Meeting in special session, the Spencer City Council Monday evening voted unanimously to hold a special election to fill another vacancy on the council.

Ward 5 councilman Chuck Illg was elected to the seat in November of last year. He works in a seasonal position at the city-owned golf course. City officials say Illg recently reapplied for the golf course job for the upcoming summer. Mayor Donavan Wunschel said they had originally done research that indicated Illg could serve on the council, but he says they now found another portion of code that differs with that. Illg opted to take the job at the golf course instead and resigned from the council.

The special election for Ward 5 will be separate from another one to fill a vacancy for the Ward 4 seat. Wunschel held that seat previously and was elected Mayor in November. The council initially made an appointment to fill that position, but a petition was filed by citizens forcing the special election set for April 7th.

A date for the Ward 5 election hasn’t been set yet, but city officials say it will likely be held in May.
