D.O.T Seeking Input On Bridge Replacement On Hwy 18 In Clay County

March 04, 2026

(Spencer)– The Iowa Department of Transportation is seeking input on plans to replace a bridge on Highway 18 about two miles west of the North Y, northwest of Spencer. A D.O.T representative explains the nature of the project…

“The scope of the work is to remove the existing 176 and-a-half foot by 28 foot concrete and I-beam bridge and construct a new 229 foot by 44 foot pre-tensioned, pre-stressed, concrete beam bridge.”

Traffic will be re-routed while the project is underway…

“The detour will likely use the following routes: County Road M-44 south to 360th Street; east on 360th Street to U.S. 71; and then continue east to the junction of U.S. 71 and and U.S. 18.”

Actual construction is still a couple of years away…

“The anticipated project letting is scheduled for November, 2027. Construction would begin in the spring of 2028 and the project should be completed by the end of 2028. The estimated project cost is $2.5 million.”
