Great Iowa Treasure Hunt Is Underway

January 30, 2026

(Des Moines)– Iowa currently has more than 600 million dollars in unclaimed property, Iowa State Treasurer Roby Smith says this includes money, checking accounts, stocks, and other assets…

“Everything from cash and stocks to abandoned checking accounts and personal valuables. That money does not belong to the state of Iowa. It belongs to the past and present Iowans.”

Financial institutions are required to turn over unclaimed property to the State Treasurer’s Office after a certain period of time.
