(Spirit Lake)– Five Dickinson County Fire Departments will compete this weekend to see who makes the best chili. Jason Simpson of the Milford Fire Department tells KUOO news the annual “Battle of the Chili Pots” will be taking place this Saturday, January 17th, from 5:00 until 7:00 pm. He says this year’s event will be held at the Spirit Lake Fire Station…
“And they do a freewill donation and you’ll get a bowl and some judging beads. You’ll go taste test every single chili and the one that you like the best, you take your judging bead and you drop it in the jar in front of that chili pot.”
Departments will be competing in two categories: the best mild chili and the spiciest. Simpson says this will mark the eighth year for the “Battle of the Chili Pots”…
“We used to participate in a chili feed that was held down in Spencer at the Moose Lodge. Russ Bell and I used to go down to that and that just kind of fell apart. Then we sat down one year and we thought to ourselves, hey, why can’t we do this in Dickinson county? So with a little bit of planning and reaching out to all the area fire departments, we got The Battle of the Chili Pots going here in Dickinson county and it’s just been a great thing. The winner goes home with the traveling trophy and gets the bragging rights for the year that that department made the best chili.”
Proceeds from the event are divided up among the participating departments. The revenue goes toward updating equipment, education, and fire prevention and awareness programs.
