Improperly Disposed Of Smoking Materials Said To Be Cause Of Grass Fires Near Sibley

November 07, 2025

(Sibley)– Authorities are reminding people not to toss cigarette butts out of a vehicle after two small grass fires Wednesday near Sibley. Fire Chief Ken Huls says the first one happened between 170th and 180th Streets on Pierce Avenue, around 2:45 pm Wednesday. He estimates about 500 to 1,000 square feet of grass burned. No injuries were reported and nothing of value burned.

Huls says they no sooner got done with that call and they received another call for a grass fire near the Highway 60 off-ramp for Highway 9 northeast of Sibley. That fire was 500 square feet in size. No injuries were reported.

Huls says improperly discarded smoking materials are to blame for both fires.
