(Des Moines)– Governor Kim Reynolds announced today (Thurs.) the state will provide interim support for Iowa’s food banks and pantries if SNAP benefits end as expected this Saturday due to the federal government shutdown.
Reynolds has directed HHS and Volunteer Iowa to recruit and deploy volunteers to support food assistance operations in communities where help is needed. She has also ordered the Iowa National Guard to prepare for active duty to conduct food distribution missions statewide, similar to what was done during the pandemic.
Governor Reynolds is also directing HHS to use existing state funds to match all cash donations to Iowa’s six regional food banks up to $1 million beginning Monday, November 3rd, if SNAP benefits aren’t federally funded during November.
