(Lakefield, Mn.)– The rain is giving farmers a much needed break from the harvest. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield says the string of nice weather we’ve had up until now has allowed for a really quick harvest…
“I estimate that we’re over half done with the corn harvest and I think all the soybeans are out to my knowledge, so harvest has been fast and it’s been good.”
Nesseth says corn yields continue to be variable due to fungal diseases during the growing season…
“We had just a severe southern rust problem this year, probably the worse I’ve ever seen or most of our producers have ever seen. A little bit of tar spot, but southern rust is the big culprit. And again, some hybrids took it better than others and some fungicide treatments really helped in some of those cases where you didn’t have the good plant health with the corn hybrid.”
Nesseth says the moisture we’re getting shouldn’t cause any concerns with the corn that’s still in the fields.
