City Of Spencer Is 2025 Character Counts Community Of The Year

August 11, 2025

(Spencer)– The city of Spencer has been named 2025 Community of the Year through the state of Iowa’s Character Counts Program. Mayor Steve Bomgaars says he and a delegation of city representatives were recently presented the award during a ceremony in Des Moines. Bomgaars made the announcement at last week’s city council meeting…

“The Iowa Character Awards Community of Character, city of Spencer, in honor of your 2025 Iowa Character Award for demonstrating trust worthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and good citizenship. And those are the six pillars of character that Character Counts is based on. I’d also like to note that Sheriffa Jones, the Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce, was a nominee for Person of the Year in the state of Iowa through the Character Counts organization.”

Bomgaars says the award is a true testament to the residents of Spencer and their resiliency from last year’s flood.
