DNR Advises Not Swimming At Two Lakes Area Beaches Due To E-coli

August 11, 2025

(Des Moines)– Over a dozen Iowa beaches are not advisable for swimming. Two of those are in the Iowa Great Lakes Area. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources advises residents to avoid water activities at 16 beaches throughout the state including Crandall’s Beach on the north shore of Big Spirit Lake and the swimming area at the Emmerson Bay Campground and access on West Lake Okoboji.

Officials say most of the state beaches have high E. Coli levels, with one exceeding the Algal toxin action level standards.

A full list of affected beaches is available on the Iowa DNR website.
