SLPA Holds Annual Fireworks Display This (Thurs.) Evening Over Big Spirit Lake

July 03, 2025

(Orleans)– The Spirit Lake Protective Association will hold its annual fireworks display this (Thurs.) evening over Big Spirit Lake. Association President John Smelzer says the July 3rd display has become a longstanding tradition…

“We started our fireworks in a small way in about 1974 when a group of folks from Templar Park said let’s have some fireworks, and the Spirit Lake Protective Association was a participant but not a lead, and then we became the lead and have been doing so ever since I think with maybe one year of hiatus. We will be doing fireworks again on Big Spirit Lake at 10:00 on July 3rd, the evening of July 3rd, probably launched from about the same location as it has in the last two or three years. We look forward to good weather. Obviously we knock on wood when we say that because you never really know. But July 3rd is the scheduled date and so far we’ve been pretty good at being able to hit that target.”

Motorists will need to be mindful of some road work on 140th Street on the southwest shore of Big Spirit Lake between Peoria Avenue and Hill Avenue. This evening’s display will be accompanied by a montage of patriotic music on our sister station, KUQQ.

The Iowa Great Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce holds its annual 4th of July fireworks display Friday evening over West Lake Okoboji. It, too, will be accompanied by a montage of patriotic music right here on KUOO.
